The And Then They Came For Me by James Still is near and dear to Abigail’s heart. Her father was a holocaust survivor; her grandparents’ families were murdered en masse by the Nazis in the Ukraine. The Los Angeles Ovation Award for Best Production in a Large Venue, which the production was awarded in 2020 (2021?), was a testament to Murry Hepner’s vision for Mainstreet Theater Company, for which Abigail has directed productions. There Murry created a mecca for the finest LA theater practitioners to come and do their creative best– no matter if the audience was young or old, Jewish or Christian, Chinese, French or Mexican. She understands that theater brings us together, evoking our curiosity and empathy for other people’s stories– an essential ingredient for peaceful coexistence.

Abigail is an award-winning, freelance theater and film director, writer, dramaturg and teacher. Her background in architectural studies and the visual arts informs her directing work both in the three-dimensional space of theater and in the cinematic frame, where she is committed to affective storytelling not only through dialogue, story and performance but also in her collaborative work with designers, cinematographers, writers and artists.

Abigail has just been honored with the 2024 LA Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Director for her production of Dido Of Idaho at the Echo Theater Company. She will soon have a website of her very own!

“It is meaningful for me to be performing And Then They Came

For Me again with the same beautiful people, at a time when

antisemitism is at the highest levels since 1938 - as the last

remaining survivors are watching. It feels like a significant time

to tell stories of real people who went through something so

unfathomable. Thank you Murry, Abigail and the whole team at

In Other People’s Shoes for bringing us together again to tell

these stories and for producing important theatre for young

people.”

Thanks so much for joining us for this special one-day -only event!

AND THEN THEY CAME FOR ME was first produced in 1996, when Eva Schloss and

Ed Silverberg were just beginning to talk about their experiences as teenagers during the Holocaust. Playwright James Still was able to capture their memories on video tape, and we are so lucky to be able to have their testimony to share with you 29 years later.

The play exposes the devastating story of the Holocaust by focusing on the individual stories of two families. By learning about and understanding the experiences of these particular teenagers in Europe in the 1940’s, our hope is that people of all ages will be able to think about their own lives, those of the people around them, and the consequences of the choices they make.

The play resonates differently than it did 5 years ago when this group of artists came together for the first time. It feels more immediate and more urgent to tell these stories again. Many survivors will not be around to tell their own stories for much longer, so it's up to us and the next generation to take the lessons learned and continue sharing them.
